Itinerary

Full Itinerary

Your tour will begin as you are conveniently collected from your hotel in Brasov by your professional and knowledgeable guide. Once you have comfortably departed the historic city of Brasov, you will embark on a journey toward one of the continent’s most celebrated engineering marvels: the legendary Transfagarasan Highway.

Your first captivating stop will be for a visit to the serene and historic Cârța Cistercian Monastery. This remarkable architectural gem was originally constructed at the very beginning of the 13th century in the distinctive Gothic style. It was founded by an order of Cistercian monks who traveled to Transylvania all the way from the Burgundy region of France, leaving a lasting spiritual and cultural mark on the landscape.

You will then continue your ascent into the majestic Făgăraș Mountains, which proudly host the winding path of the Transfagarasan Highway. Renowned as the most spectacular and breathtaking mountain road in all of Europe, this route gained international fame after being featured on the acclaimed UK motoring show, Top Gear. The road traverses dramatically up through the high peaks, serving as a stunning ribbon that unites the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia. As you travel its curves, you will experience truly great scenic vistas, pass by noisy and powerful waterfalls, and—with a little luck—you may even catch a glimpse of wild animals such as the native brown bear or agile black goats (chamois) in their natural habitat.

Moving onward to even greater altitudes, you will travel to the stunning Balea Glacier Lake. Here, you will pause to enjoy a well-earned lunch at the iconic Lake Balea Chalet, which offers cozy refuge and panoramic views. Following your meal, you can take a leisurely and refreshing walk around the pristine glacial lake. During the summer months, you can also choose to climb up the slope near the lake. From the top of this ridge, you will be rewarded with the opportunity to take wonderful photographs capturing the majestic peaks of the surrounding mountains, together with the glittering lake and the picturesque Balea Chalet below.

Please note that in the winter season, typically between December and March, you will have the unique opportunity to visit the famous ice hotel constructed nearby, as well as its enchanting neighboring ice church—a true wonder of temporary architecture. You will later return to Brasov in the evening, descending from the heights with wonderful and lasting memories of your extraordinary trip into the sky.

A specific winter logistical note: During the colder period, from approximately November through July, the upper section of the Transfagarasan road is closed due to heavy snowfall. For tours in this season, we will travel by specialized van up to the Hotel Cascada Balea at 1446m. From this point, we will take the cable car for the final ascent up to Lake Balea. Please be advised that the price for the cable car (approximately 100 Lei or 24 Euros for a round-trip ticket) is not included in the base price of the tour.
