Highlights

The Road was featured in a segment of the British TV show Top Gear, in the first episode of Series 14 . Host Jeremy Clarkson proclaimed that the Transfăgărășan was “the best road in the world,”

The Transfăgărășan Road is not merely a highway; it is Romania’s most spectacular and legendary driving experience. Carved dramatically across the spine of the Făgăraș Mountains, this serpentine engineering marvel boasts a dizzying series of hairpin turns, steep tunnels, and vistas of breathtaking, raw beauty. Famously dubbed “the best road in the world” by BBC’s Top Gear, it climbs to over 2,000 meters, offering access to glacial lakes like Bâlea and the ruins of Poenari Castle, the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler. It is a journey that blends automotive thrill with profound, untamed nature.

Overview

Built mainly by military forces, the road had a high financial and human cost. Work was carried out in an alpine climate, at an elevation of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft), using roughly six million kilograms (5,900 long tons; 6,600 short tons) of dynamite, and employing junior military personnel who were untrained in blasting techniques. Many workers died; official records state that only 40 soldiers lost their lives, but unofficial estimates by workers put the number in the hundreds.

The road was officially opened on 20 September 1974, although work, particularly paving of the roadbed, continued until 1980
Next you see the open air Village Museum which will provide you with a unique experience and will give you a glimpse in the life of the Romanian peasants from more than 100 years ago. This museum is particularly impressive because all the houses were taken from their original locations and rebuilt here in Bucharest almost one century ago.

In the afternoon you leave crowded Bucharest behind and visit Mogosoaia Palace. Imagine that one of the wealthiest families in Romania managed to spend almost all their fortune in order to restore this wonderful place. Take a trip back in time to a more elendant era and find all the secrets of this place together with your guide. From here you are driving north from the city in order to see a place surrounded in myth and history. The Snagov Monastery is the supposed burial place of a famous Romanian ruler: Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula. The monastery is on a small island in the middle of a beautiful lake.
