The views were spectacular. The road was really twisty but the bus driver Johnny did a great job. He drive gently. We had enough time to do photos, eat something and look at souvenirs.

Full Itinerary

Embark on one of the most popular day trips from Bucharest and discover Romania’s top attractions in the Carpathian Mountains, including the Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Poenari Fortress, Vidraru Dam, Capra Waterfall, and the spectacular Bâlea Lake on the world-famous Transfăgărășan Road. This full-day tour combines royal history, medieval legends, breathtaking mountain scenery, and one of the most scenic drives in Europe.

Start your journey at the iconic Curtea de Argeș Monastery, one of Romania’s most visited religious sites. Explore its unique architecture and visit the royal tombs of King Carol I, Queen Elisabeth, King Ferdinand, and Queen Marie, making it a must-see landmark for travelers interested in Romanian history and culture.

Continue along the dramatic Transfăgărășan as you approach Poenari Fortress, the authentic mountain stronghold of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula). From the roadside viewpoint, enjoy panoramic photos of this legendary medieval fortress perched on a steep cliff above the Argeș Valley—a highlight for history lovers and Dracula fans.

Your adventure then leads to the impressive Vidraru Dam, one of Romania’s most important hydro-engineering structures. Walk across the dam, admire the stunning views over Vidraru Lake, and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery surrounding this iconic landmark.

As you climb further into the Făgăraș Mountains, stop to admire the beautiful Capra Waterfall, a natural wonder located along the Transfăgărășan Road. This cascading waterfall is one of the most scenic stops on the route and a favorite spot for photography and nature lovers.

Your final destination is the breathtaking Bâlea Lake, a spectacular high-altitude glacial lake located at over 2,000 meters. Surrounded by rugged peaks, hiking trails, and alpine chalets, Bâlea Lake is the crown jewel of the Transfăgărășan and a must-see attraction on any trip through the Carpathians. Enjoy free time to explore, take photos, or have lunch with an incredible view of the lake and mountains.

This Bucharest to Bâlea Lake and Transfăgărășan day tour is ideal for travelers looking to experience Romania’s most beautiful landscapes, iconic monuments, and legendary sites in a single day. With royal history, medieval fortresses, engineering marvels, glacial lakes, and dramatic mountain roads, it’s one of the best-rated experiences in the country and a top choice for visitors.
